[40] διὰ σφέας describes his movement as he passes through the midst of them on his way to the palace. Cp. “δἰ αὐτῶν ἐρχομένη Od.10. 391, where the genitive gives a slightly different point of view. See Eurip. Hipp.753 διὰ πόντιον κῦμ᾽ ἐπόρευσας”.
