[405] γαίων occurs only in this phrase, 5.906 of Ares, 8.51 and 11.81 of Zeus. The line in E was rejected by Ar. on the ground that Ares could hardly be said to ‘rejoice in his glory’ immediately after his ignominious defeat by a mortal. But Hentze suggests that “κῦδος” may refer rather to the outward splendour of a divinity (cf. “κυδαίνω5.448), so that the phrase means ‘brilliant with splendour.’
