[424] κατά Ar., “μετά” MSS. “κατά” means ‘in the matter of a banquet,’ cf. H. G. § 212 (3); “μετά” would be ‘to look for’ a banquet, which is a somewhat undignified expression as used of a god. The variant “ἕπονται” for ἕποντο, mentioned by Did., is an attempt to get over the contradiction of the line with the presence of the gods in the camp: ‘they are following (going to follow) him (to-day?).’ But “ἕπεσθαι” in Greek always means ‘to accompany,’ or some immediately related notion. It never means ‘to follow’ at an interval.
