[167] αἰόλοι, bright = coloured, variegated. Others after Buttmann take it to mean flexible, from the thin waist of the wasp; cf. 19.404 “πόδας αἰόλος ἵππος”. The same ambiguity arises in line 208 “αἰόλον ὄφιν,” 22.509 “αἰόλαι εὐλαί”.
