[754] μεμαώς, the “α” is elsewhere found long only when followed by “ο” (“μεμαότες2.818, where see note, “μεμαότε13.197). The other passages all have -“α^ω”- (about eighty-five times in H.). We may compare “τεθνηῶτα” by “τεθνεῶτι”. See H. G. § 26. 1. The “α” is naturally short (“μα” = “μν”, weak form of “μον- μεν”-). The “α_” in “μεμαότε” may be due to metrical necessity, and in “μεμαώς” here to the analogy of that form. But see Schulze Q. E. p. 366 note, where he assumes another root “μα_”: “μα^”, cf. “μαιμα?ει”.
