[136] The contracted form νεῦμαι is suspicious, “νεῖσθαιOd. 15.88 being the only other instance where the diphthong is in arsi and cannot be resolved. Nauck conj. “ἠοόθεν νέομαι γάρ”, but “γάρ” occupies the third place only when preceded by “μέν, περ, τε”, and once (11.700) by a preposition with its case (Bekker H. B. i. 286. 28: Fick suggests that the colon might be put after “ἠῶθεν” instead of after “ἴδηαι”). Menrad conj. “νίσσομ᾽”, which is better; the change may have been made to avoid the unusual elision of -“αι” (cf. 15.110, 18.194).
