[259] The iterative χαίρεσκον is hardly to be explained, unless it be assumed to refer to a period before the story of the Iliad; even this would be inconsistent with passages shewing that the Trojans remained in or near the city while Achilles yet fought (9.353). The allusion can only be to the previous bivouac of the Trojans “ἐπὶ θρωσμῶι πεδίοιο”, after their success in Θ. “ ἰαύων ”, passing the night, see 9.325. “ ἔγωγε ”, emphatic, ‘I, the same who used to delight . . am now afraid,’ etc.
