[294] The “ϝ” of ϝέλσαι is neglected. Hence Heyne proposes to read “καὶ ἀμφ᾽ ἅλα” (from 1.409) for “θαλάσσηι τ᾽”. Such a change is unlikely, though it might be explained by the apparent hiatus. On the other hand, there is no ground for rejecting the lines; unlike what precedes they cohere well with the rest of the speech, and it is wisest to accept the neglected “ϝ” as another indication of the date of all this part.
