The difficulty involved in the use of so soft a metal as tin, and emphasized by the adj. ἑανοῦ pliant, has been removed by Reichel's remark (see App. B, ii. 1) that the “κνημῖδες” are really gaiters designed to save the shin from injury against the edge of the shield, not from missiles.
