[282] For the lament of Briseis see Introduction. Apart from the question of style and other difficulties, it contains many non-Epic expressions; “ἰκέλη” for “Ϝικέλη, σε ἔλειπον” with hiatus illicitus, “εἶδον” (292) which cannot be resolved into “ἔϝιδον, ἑκάστη” for “Ϝεκάστη. πρόφασιν”, 302, is also doubtful. Tearing the skin (285) is not elsewhere found as a sign of grief; heroic mourners do not go farther than tearing their hair. But this may possibly be meant for a ‘barbarian’ custom.
