[463] προκαθιζόντων, a pregnant expression, ‘keep settling ever forwards’; the whole body moves forward by the continual advance of single birds who keep settling in front of the rest. σμαραγεῖ may here, as in the two other passages where it occurs (210, 21.199), be taken to refer either to bright light or loud noise, but the latter is generally adopted, and suits the simile best.
