[159] βοείην, perhaps a shield, as 17.492, q.v. A mere hide seems too cheap a thing for a prize, though Schol. T says “καὶ νῦν Οἰταῖοι Ἡρακλεῖ πεν ταετήριον ἀγῶνα ποιοῦντες βύρσας διδόασι. ἱερ́ηϊον”: an animal for sacrifice, probably an ox, cf. 23.260. So also in Od. 14.250, Od. 17.600.
