[281] ἀρτιεπ́ης, glib of tongue (cf. “ἀρτίπους ἀρτίφρων”), i.e. a mere chatterer, not a doer. So in the next clause μύθων is the emphatic word. ἐπίκλοπος, wily, as Od. 11.364, Od. 13.291, and with the same construction Od. 21.397 “ἐπίκλοπος ἔπλετο τόξων”, cunning in bows. The evolution from “κλέπτω” of the purely mental sense, cozen, conceal, do secretly, goes very far in later Greek, see L. and The S. transitional steps “κλέπτειν νόον” and “νόωι” are Homeric, 14.217, 1.132, etc. Cf. the “ἐπίκλοπον ἦθος” of women, Hes. Opp. 67.
