[290] The synizesis of εὔχεο is very rare, if not unknown in the rest of the Iliad, and is another sign of the affinity of this book with the Od.; see note on 17.142. Menrad reads “ἀλλὰ σύ γ᾽ εὔχε᾽ ἔπειτα. ἔπειτα”, perhaps ‘after all that has been said,’ to make an end of it. Bergk remarks that the idea of praying for an omen is elsewhere peculiar to Od.; in Il. we hear only of unsought signs.
