[321] So Herodotos enumerates among the privileges of the Spartan kings (vi. 56) “τῶν θυομένων πάντων τὰ δέρματά τε καὶ τὰ νῶτα λαμβάνειν σφέας”. Cf. Virg. Aen. viii. 183vescitur Aeneas .. perpetui tergo bovis. Similarly the chine (“νῶτα”) is the portion of honour in 9.207, Od. 4.65, Od. 8.475, Od. 14.437.
