ἄμπωτις , , gen. εως, Ion. ιος, for ἀνάπωτις ἀναπίνομαι), v. infr.:—
A.being sucked back, i.e. of sea, ebb, opp., πλημμυρίς or ῥαχία (Ion. ῥηχίη), Hdt.2.11, 7.198, 8.129, Arist.Mete.366a19, Placit.3.17, Agatharch. 32, etc.: in pl., ebb and flow, tides, Arist.Mu.396a26, Peripl.M.Rubr. 45, App.Hisp.1, Hdn.3.14.6.—The full form ἀνάπωτις only Pi.O. 9.52, Scymn.110, and later Prose, Plb.10.14.2 (s. v.l.), Arr.Ind.22.8: gen. -πώτιδος, Agatharch.101.
