I. Adv. from beneath, up from below, “αὐτὰρ νέρθε Ποσειδάων ἐτίναξε” Il.20.57; “πέμψατ᾽ ἔνερθεν ψυχὴν εἰς φῶς” A.Pers.630; “τήνδ᾽ ἔπεμψας νέρθεν ἐς φάος” E.Alc.1139, cf. 985 (lyr.); “ν. ἀνακαλούμενον” Id.Hel.966.
2. without sense of motion, beneath, below, “ἔ. πόδες καὶ χεῖρες ὕπερθε” Il.13.75, cf. 78; “ῥαίνοντο δὲ νέρθε κονίῃ [ἵπποι]” 11.282, cf. 535, etc.; “πρόσωπά τε ν. τε γοῦνα” Od.20.352; esp. of the nether world, οἱ ἔ. θεοί the gods below, Il.14.274; “τοῖς ἔ. νεκροῖς” S.Ant.25 (lyr.), cf. 2. subject to, in the power of, “ἐχθρῶν ἔ. ὄντα” S.Ph.666. —Never in Att. Prose; used by Hdt., “ἔ. τῆς λίμνης” 2.13 (abs. in metaph. sense, inferior, “τοῖς ἅπασι” 1.91); also in IG4.1485.57 (Epid.), Aret.CD1.3, Luc.Rh.Pr.4; in form νέρθε, IG12(2).74b21 (Mytil., iii B.C.).
