φυ_λοκρι^νέω ,
A.make distinctions of tribe, “εἰ . . φυλοκρινοῖεν οἷς χρεὼν βοηθεῖν” Th.6.18; “ἐλέχθη τὸ μὴ φυλοκρινεῖν πρὸς τοὺς ἐξετάζειν τὰ γένη βουλομένους” Arist.Ath.21.2: hence metaph., classify, Luc.Abd.4, Phal.2.9; also, distinguish precisely, “ἕκαστον ὁποῖόν ἐστι” S.E.M.7.183; cf. Phryn.PSp.123B., Poll.8.110, etc.
II. select carefully, “τὸ βουλευτικὸν πᾶν καὶ φ. καὶ διαλέξαι” D.C.52.19, cf. Aristid. 1.218J. (s.v.l.).
III. pick out, “ἀπὸ τῶν φαύλων τοὺς χρηστούς” Lib.Or.16.51, cf. Porph.Phil.Hist.Fr.11; “τὰς ἐξ ἡλίου καὶ σελήνης προϊούσας εἰς τὴν γένεσιν ποιήσεις παρατηρητικῶς φ.” Procl. in Cra. p.74P. (φιλοκρινέω is freq. f.l.; “φυλλοκρίνειν” Hsch.）
