I.to suppose, think, deem, imagine, c. acc. et inf., mostly inf. fut., Hom., etc.
2.c. inf. alone, when both Verbs have the same subject, as, κιχήσεσθαί σε ὀΐω I think to catch, i. e. I think I shall. . , Il.; οὐ γὰρ ὀΐω πολεμίζειν I do not think, i. e. mean, to fight, id=Il.; ἐν πρώτοισιν ὀΐω ἔμμεναι I expect to be, Od.
3.sometimes the subject of the inf. is to be supplied from the context (as in I), τρώσεσθαι ὀΐω I fear [that many] will be wounded, Il.; διωκέμεναι γὰρ ὀΐω I fear [they] are pursuing me, Od.
4.absol., αἰεὶ ὀΐεαι thou art ever suspecting, Il.: also, to deem, forebode, θυμὸς ὀΐσατό μοι my heart foreboded it, Od.; ὀΐσατο κατὰ θυμόν he had a presage of it in his soul, id=Od. :—impers., ὀΐεταί μοι ἀνὰ θυμόν there comes a boding into my heart, id=Od.
II.trans. to wait for, look for, κεῖνον ὀϊομένη looking for his return, id=Od.; γόον δ᾽ ὠίετο θυμός his soul was intent on grief, id=Od.
III.used by Hom. parenthetically, in first person, ἐν πρώτοισιν, ὀΐω, κείσεται among the first, I ween, will he be lying, Il.; ἔπειτά γ᾽, ὀΐω, γνώσεαι Od.
2.in attic this parenthetic use in confined to the contr, form οἶμαι, imperf. ὤιμην, I think, I suppose, I believe; even between a prep. and its case, ἐν οἶμαι πολλοῖς Dem.:—answering a question, expressive of positive certainty, I believe you, of course, no doubt, Ar., etc. ; οἶμαι ἔγωγε yes I think so, yes certainly, Plat.:—also in a parenthetic question, πῶς οἴει; πῶς οἴεσθε; how think you ? like πῶς δοκεῖς; also οἴει; alone, don't you think so? what think you? id=Ar.
