I.Carchedonian, i. e. Carthaginian (since Καρχηδών = Carthago): “carbunculus,a brilliant precious stone frequently found in the country of the Carthaginians, Plin. 37, 7, 25, § 92 sq.—Hence, subst.: Car-chēdŏnĭus , ii, m., a Carthaginian, Plaut. Poen. prol. 53.
