I.a pledge, security (esp. of immovable things; whereas pignus is used of movable things; cf. “also: arra, arrabo),a mortgage, Just. Inst. 4, 6, § 7; Dig. 13, 7, 9; 20, 1, 2 et saep. (in Cic.
