Anticyra
(
Ἀντίκυρα).
1.
A town in Phocis, on a bay of the Crissaean Gulf.
2.
A town in Thessaly, on the Spercheus, not far from its mouth. Both towns were celebrated
for their hellebore, the chief remedy in antiquity for madness: hence the proverb
naviget Anticyram when a person acted senselessly (
Hor. Sat. ii. 3.166).
