Echĕmus
(
Ἔχεμος). A king of Arcadia, who slew, in single combat,
Hyllus, the son of Heracles, during the Dorian invasion of the Peloponnesus. As a result
of the combat, the
Heraclidae (q.v.) were obliged
to promise not to repeat their attempt on the Peloponnesus for fifty years (
Herod.ix. 26). See
