Academĭca
or
Academĭcae Quaestiōnes. A treatise of Cicero,
written B.C. 45, originally in two books, named after Catulus and Lucullus, but subsequently
in four books. Of the first edition, the second book (
Lucullus) has come down
to us; of the second (
Academica Posteriora), the first part of
the first book, and fragments exist. The Lucullus contains an account of the teachings of
Antiochus and Philo regarding knowledge; the beginning of the second edition, besides some
general observations, gives a sketch of the history of philosophy from Socrates to
Arcesilaüs. An excellent edition of the
Academica, in English, is that
of Reid
(1885).
