Apex
A cap of conical form worn by the flamens (see
Flamen), having a spike of olivewood at the top, which the word
apex, in fact, originally denoted. Without it the flamens were not allowed to go into
the open air (
Gell. x. 15). The Salii likewise wore the apex. The
accompanying illustration shows one of the Salii wearing the apex and with a rod in his hand.
