CUCULUM
CUCULUM (
Κούκουλον,
Strab. v. p.238), a town of Central Italy, mentioned only by Strabo, who tells us that it was
near the Via Valeria, but not
on it, and seems to place it
after Carseoli and Alba, in following the course of that road.
There can be little doubt that it has been correctly fixed by Holstenius (
Not. ad Cluv. p. 155), at a place still called
Cucullo, a small town on the ridge of the Apennines, that separates the. basin of the lake Fucinus from the valley of Corfinium and Sulmo, and about 5 miles from the pass of the
Forca Carrosa, where the Via Valeria traverses the ridge in question.
It would be thus on the very confines of the Marsi and Peligni, but it is not known to which people it belonged. (Romanelli, vol. iii. pp. 139, 140; but see Kramer,
