EBUROBRICA

EBUROBRICA (in the Antonine Itin.), EBUROBRIGA (in the Table), was on a road between Autesiodurum (Auxerre) and Augustobona (Troyes). There is the usual difficulty about the distances, but it is not great. It is agreed that the place is St. Florentin, on the small river Armance, which flows into the Armançon, a branch of the Yonne. The termination brica, briga, or briva is all one, and always indicates the passage of a river. D'Anville observes that between St. Florentin and Auxerre the passage of the Sérain is at a place called Pontigny, in which case we have a Roman name indicating the same fact that the Celtic term “briva” or “briga” indicates.
