This name was applied by the ancients to the Nomadic hordes who roamed over the N. E. of Europe, neither sowing nor planting,--but living on food derived from animals, especially mares' milk, and cheese,--and moved from place to place, carrying their families in waggons covered with wicker and leather, in the same manner as the Tartars of the present day.
