382. The only Ionic contraction of εἰ ἄν is ἤν, which is used in Homer and Herodotus. The Attic Greek has ἐάν, ἤν, and ἄν (α_); but α?ν, if, was probably never used by the tragedians or by Thucydides, although the Mss. have it in a few cases.
