ἄριστος): subst. (answering to the adj. ἀγαθός), excellence (of
whatever sort), merit;

ἀρετα?ς, ἠμὲν πόδας ἠδὲ μάχεσθαι, all kinds of
‘prowess,’ Il.

ἀρετὴν (εἶδος τε δέμας τε）

; τῆς ἀρετῆς (Od. 2.206) includes more. The signif. well-being,
prosperity (Il. 20.242,
Od. 13.45) answers to εὖ rather than to ἀγαθός.
