μόνον οὐχί, L. and S. μόνος, B. II. 5.

ἐκείνων, “over yonder” in Olynthus.

αὐτοῖς, emphatic.

αὐτῶν, i.e. τῶν πραγμάτων.

οὐκ οἶδ᾽ ὅντινα, euphemistic. Demosthenes keeps direct reproach till later.

τά γ᾽ ἐμοὶ=τά ἔμοιγε, for euphony.

ἤδη, “at once.”

τὴν ταχίστην. L. and S. ταχύς, C. II. 3.

ὅπως . . . βοηθήσητε. Most editors now read βοηθήσετε with one worthless MS. In favour of the future it may be argued that the more vivid construction, which is also the commonest, is here called for, and that the weak aorist subjunctive is avoided where it resembles the future in form, while the blending of future and subjunctive after ὅπως may be easily paralleled. But there are several well-authenticated instances of the sigmatic aorist after ὅπως in Demosthenes (cf. below, ii. § 2, iii. § 2), which have been recklessly altered.

πρότερον. For historical instances see § 9 (note).

ἥτις . . . ἐρεῖ. The future is regularly used to show purpose.
