[547] δῆμον: the country, cf. 3.50.

Ἐρεχθῆος: originally identical with Erichthonius. An old hero of Athens, under whose rule, acc. to Hdt. viii. 44, the people were first called Athenians. Athena herself is here made to be the founder of his cult.
