Federal major-generals commanding the first and second army corps

Irvin McDowell commanded the 1st Corps in front of Washington.

A. A. Humphreys commanded the 2d Corps at Petersburg.

John Newton commanded the 1st Corps at Gettysburg and after.

Darius N. Couch commanded the 2d Corps at Fredericksburg and Chancellorsville.

Edwin Vose Sumner commanded the 2d Corps on the Peninsula and in Maryland.

Winfield Scott Hancock; under him the Second Corps earned the name ‘old Guard.’
