A symbol used in the record of American and foreign shipping and in Lloyd's Register of British and foreign shipping, in rating vessels for insurance. A1 is the highest. Hence A1 is used of the highest mercantile credit, and, colloquially, A1 or A No. 1 is equivalent to first-class, first-rate.
