Burley, Bennett,

G., naval officer; served in the Confederate navy. On Sept. 19, 1864, with other Confederates, he seized the Philo Parsons, a steamer on Lake Erie, and afterwards another steamer. the Island Queen, with which his party intended to capture the United States gunboat Michigan and release the Confederate prisoners on Johnson's Island; but the Michigan captured the whole party. the Island Queen was sunk and the Philo Parsons abandoned. Burley was placed on trial for extradition, and after considerable diplomatic correspondence with the British government was surrendered to the United States authorities for punishment. The Confederate government, under the plea of belligerent rights, endeavored to secure his release or exchange, but without success.
