War governor; born in
Cincinnati, O., Nov. 23, 1815; was educated at the Miami University, and graduated in 1835.
Admitted to the bar in 1840, he became an eminent practi, tioner.
In 1848-50 he was a member of the Ohio legislature; and he took an active part in financial and railroad matters.
Mr. Dennison was one of the founders of the Republican party in 1856.
In 1860 he was chosen governor of
Ohio, which office he held two years, during which time he performed most important official service in putting troops into the field for the
Union army.
From October, 1864, to July, 1866, he was Postmaster-

General, when he withdrew from the cabinet of
President Johnson.
He died in
Columbus, O., June 15, 1882.
