Hammond, James Henry 1807-

Statesman; born in Newberry, S. C., Nov. 15, 1807; graduated at South Carolina College in 1825; elected to Congress in 1835; governor of the State in 1842, and United States Senator in 1857. He was a supporter of Calhoun, and an ardent advocate of nullification. When South Carolina seceded he resigned his seat in the United States Senate, and retired to his plantation in Beech Island, where he died. Nov. 13, 1864.
