Hessian fly,

The American wheat midge, destructive to wheat in the United States, whither it is said to have been brought by the Hessian soldiers in British pay during the Revolutionary War, in 1786, 1846, and 1886. The fly also occasioned much destruction in England and Scotland in 1788, 1887, and 1890.
