Petigru, James Lewis 1789-1863

Statesman; born in Abbeville district, S. C., March 10, 1789; graduated at the University of South Carolina in 1809; admitted to the bar in 1811. He was an opponent of nullification in 1830, and of secession in 1860. A Memoir of his life was written by William J. Grayson and published in 1866. He died in Charleston, S. C., March 3, 1863.
