Radford, William 1808-1890

Naval officer; born in Fincastle, Va., March 1, 1808; entered the navy as midshipman in March, 1825; served on the Mexican coast, as lieutenant, in the war against Mexico, and was in command of the Cumberland when sunk by the Merrimac in Hampton Roads, in March, 1861 (see monitor and Merrimac). In the attacks of Porter's squadron on Fort Fisher, Radford commanded the New Ironsides. He was promoted rear-admiral in 1866; commanded the European Squadron in 1869—70; retired March 1, 1870. He died in Washington, D. C., Jan. 8, 1890.
