Sprague, William 1830-

Governor; born in Cranston, R. I., Sept. 12, 1830; was governor of Rhode Island in 1860-63; raised a battery of light artillery with which he took part in the battle of Bull Run; won distinction in the Peninsular campaign; refused a commission of brigadiergeneral of volunteers; and was United States Senator in 1863-75. He married Kate, daughter of Chief-Justice Salmon P. Chase. For many years he was one of the most extensive manufacturers in New England, and at the height of his fame was accounted a very wealthy man.
