Smythe, William Ellsworth 1861-

Journalist; born in Worcester, Mass., Dec. 24, 1861; received an academic education; settled in the West in 1888, and was there editor of various papers. He is the author of The conquest of arid America, and magazine articles, including The irrigation idea; Arid America; Ultimate California; The Mormon industrial system; Real Utopias of the arid West; The step-child of the republic; and The struggle for water in the West.
