Beauharnais, Charles, Marquis de,

Military officer and a natural son of Louis XIV.: born about 1670: was governor of New France (Canada) from 1726 to 1746, and held the rank of commodore in the French navy, and lieutenant-general of the naval army. On the breaking out of war with England (1745), he built the fortress of Crown Point, which was afterwards enlarged and strengthened by Amherst. He died June 12, 1749.
