Marque and reprisal, letters of

Commissions granted in time of war to a private person commanding a vessel to cruise at sea and make prizes of the enemy's ships and merchandise. The ship so commanded is sometimes called by the same name. The word mark (frontier) was used by the Germans to denote the right of capturing property beyond the frontier of another province.
