Van Wart, Isaac 1760-1828

Patriot; born in Greenburg, N. Y., in 1760; engaged in farming in Westchester county, N. Y. During the Revolutionary War he was an ardent sympathizer with the patriot cause, and on Sept. 23, 1780, with John Paulding and David Williams, captured Maj. John Andre (q. v.) when that officer was returning from the American lines. For this act each of the three captors received the thanks of Congress, a pension of $200 per annum for life, and a silver medal. He died in Mount Pleasant, N. Y., May 23, 1828. A monument was erected to his memory by the citizens of Westchester county in 1829.
