Ore—sep′a-rator.

A general term which includes machines of various kinds for separating metallic ores from the gangue, after pulverization. They may be classed into wet and dry. Of the former are the washers, frames, cradles, jigging — machines, etc. Of the latter are ore-concentrators, etc. See also list under metallurgy.

In Fig. 3421, the crushed material descending in regulated quantities from a vertical spout impinges on the rapidly rotating disk B, from which it is thrown off by centrifugal force, being at the same time sorted according to size and gravity, [1572] the lighter portions falling farther from, and the heavier nearer to, the disk; the different sizes are received in the various grooves C C of the circular trough, and are swept into their appropriate chutes by brushes D D E attached to arms F F, which are fastened to a circular toothed rack K H rotated by a pinion driven by belt connection with the main shaft.

In Fig. 3422, the broken ore descends from a spout on to the inclined sieve B, through the meshes of which an upward current of air is passed from the bellows C. This is operated by the cam-wheel D, yokes D′ D′ D′, and levers D2; these latter are adjustable on the wheel to regulate the working of the bellows, which is provided with valves c c, the openings of which may be varied to control the force of the blast, which requires to be stronger near the lower end, where the coarser particles collect. The various sizes are discharged through different chutes F G.
