1. A form of valve for water and steam engines. a is the valve-seat, made tapering so as to fit into the valve-chamber of a pump. Upon the rim of this is fixed the bridge b, serving both as a guide and a stop for the valve c, whose lower stem enters the sleeve d.

2 shows a conical frustum c having a stem in the bridge-piece e and a seat a.

3 shows Watt's conical valve g h, with a stem in the bridge f, and operated by a lever and cord.
