William Benton Fuller

William Benton Fuller was born in Laurens county, April 30, 1842, the son of William A. and Jane Simpson (Griffin) Fuller. His father was born in Laurens county in 1812, was a school teacher and farmer, and died in 1882. William B. Fuller was reared on his father's farm in Laurens county and in 1861 became a private in Company B, Third South Carolina battalion, commanded by Lieut.-Col. George S. James. In the battle of South Mountain Lieutenant-Colonel James was killed and every man in the battalion who participated in the battle was either killed or wounded with the exception of eight. Twelve members of Company B were killed, and Private Fuller was fortunate enough to receive only a slight wound. The battalion suffered heavily and was made a part of the Third South Carolina regiment in 1865, and with this command he served until the close of the war. He participated in the battles of Fredericksburg, Chancellorsville, Gettysburg, Knoxville, Wilderness, Spottsylvania Court House, Second Cold Harbor, Cedar Creek, Deep Bottom, North Anna Bridge, and many smaller engagements. He received a slight wound at Second Cold Harbor and was captured at Spottsylvania Court House. His captor, however, was shot and instantly killed by one of Mr. Fuller's comrades, and he escaped. He was a brave soldier and his life during the four years struggle was full of thrilling and interesting incidents. Since the war he has farmed in Laurens county. He has been married twice, first in 1866, to Miss Byphemia Bryson, who died in 1867, and in 1868 he was married to Mrs. Emma E. Hill, widow of R. W. Hill and daughter of Harrison Finley. They have seven children. Mr. Fuller is lieutenant commander of Putsey Williams camp, U. C. V., at Cross Hill.
