Alton, Madison County, Illinois

a city of 15,000 pop., on Mississippi River, 21 miles above St. Louis and one mile above the mouth of Missouri River. Two lines of railroad connect it with Chicago and Terre Haute. Extensively engaged in river trade, and the great depot for shipment of the produce of a large section of country.
