State Capitol, a city of 22,500 pop., on Sangamon River, 96 miles from Springfield, and 70 miles from Peoria. The Chicago, Alton & St. Louis Railroad intersects the Toledo, Wabash & Western Railroad at this point. A rich and populous agricultural district. Coal is found in abundance in the vicinity. Engaged in manufactures and inland commerce.
